There are at least two prominent motivations for small business owners seeking small business loans without banks. One is looking backward at how banks have performed and deciding that they deserve better. In particular small business owners can point to business financing being reduced and eliminated by banks even though they were bailed out by taxpayers so that this kind of financial activity could resume at normal levels.

For a second example, banks are failing at a rate that alarms most observers so logic dictates that small businesses should not book passage on a ship that is about to sink. Meanwhile, routine small business loans are not available from the remaining banks on a reliable basis. Small business owners have already realized that they must find alternative business financing when their bank is not up to the task. The ability to obtain commercial loans without bank involvement can help small businesses to prosper both with and without banks. Thinking outside the bank has become a battle cry for some lenders in their efforts to dramatize a new bank-less approach to business financing.

Wanting to find commercial loans and working capital loans without involving banks must certainly be an outgrowth of how unpopular banks have become in the current distressed economy. Thomas Jefferson is credited as the source of an early observation that seems to be more relevant than ever today (Banking establishments are more dangerous than standing armies), especially when viewed in combination with reeling economic conditions. The dramatic bank changes seen during the past ten years or so have simply served as a renewed inspiration to forego banker relationships whenever possible.

Banks have changed just as significantly as Chrysler and General Motors, although bankruptcy was not an option for the banks due to legal and governmental restrictions. Despite fond memories of how banks operated in an earlier time, they have rapidly progressed to a mechanical and cold operation that is not likely to be appealing for either individual or business customers. The earlier image of giving toasters away has been replaced by credit card fees and foreclosures.

Key success factors for entrepreneurs

Everybody wants to be successful. No matter whether its sports, work, business or something else, we all want to be as successful as possible.

The factors that contribute toward success aren’t secret, they are well known and understood. Here I’ve summarised the top 7 that apply to many successful entrepreneurs, sports people and celebrities.

1. Do what you love doing. This is obvious really. If you love what you are doing then its not a chore, its a pleasure. The trick is to find out what really motivates you and keep doing it. For me the goal was to become a freelance web designer but I’ve worked with others for whome internet marketing was what really motivated them.
2. Exercise patience and discipline. Most successful people have the ability to see things in a from a long term perspective. Discipline is essential if you are to keep going when faced with setbacks.
3. Define your goals. Maybe one day you want to start your own business which would be an excellent goal. Clearly defined goals will help you to plot a course of actions that will lead to success.
4. Feel the fear and do it anyway. We can often procrastinate due to fear of failure. Rather than risk failing we’d rather avoid doing what we need to do. This inclination needs to be overcome.
5. Don’t procrastinate. Procrastination is often prompted by taxing or unpleasant tasks. Breaking things down into smaller, bite sized chunks can help overcome disinclinations.
6. Take responsibility. Remember and remind yourself that success is achievable and you can and will do it. At the time I knew very little. So I decided that the best course of action would be to work for a web design agency, which I did for seven years. This led to my achieving my goal and working as a freelance web designer for the past three years.
7. Draw up your own action plan. Your action list should be things that are realistic, easily measured and attainable. For example, in the action plan that I drafted for myself I listed all of the skills and experiences that I wanted to gain while employed and I ticked these off, almost daily.

Following this advice will not guarantee success, but it will make a significant and positive contribution.

Seized by a sudden whim, she decided to take the rest of the summer off and head to whatever the first European city was that popped into her head. She’d been working hard at a dreary old office job for most of the last year, and felt she deserved to get away for a while. Her plan had one huge flaw, however. As it turned out, there was not a single seat available on any of the flights going to that city. There were no seats available on flights to her second and third choice cities, either. All the travel agents that she spoke to told her the same thing; she should have made her plans months ago.

In the end, she had been left with no choice but to change her travel plans somewhat. Instead of heading to a city of her choice, she wound up booking a flight to the only destination for which seats were available. That it happened to be the capital city of a tiny country she had never heard of before did not deter her one bit. She stuffed her suitcase full of girls shirts and shoes and other essentials, and off she went.

That, in brief, was how she landed in what appeared to be the middle of nowhere. No one, absolutely not one single one of the people that she had encountered since boarding the plane, was able to understand her language. As a result, she’d had a bit of a hair-raising moment when clearing customs. For some unfathomable reason, instead of stamping her passport and letting her through as she’d expected, the agent pointed to her Swarovski earrings and began gibbering in highly excited tones. Certainly, she thought, I must have broken some local custom or prohibition. But luckily, through a combination of sign language and crudely drawn illustrations of stick figures in what looked to be police uniforms chasing stick figures armed with what looked to be guns, the agent made it clear that he was only warning her about a problem with local thieves.

As she got out of the airport, it occurred to her that she may have made a dreadful mistake. It was not warm and sunny in the least. In fact, in no time at all a frigid blast that could have blown in directly from the North Pole, had caught her skirts and blown them up over her head, much to the delight of the waiting cab-drivers. Gathering them in one hand to prevent further rude actions by the wind, she dragged her luggage to the nearest cab.

This time, luck appeared to be on her side. The driver, a portly fellow wearing a pork-pie hat, was not able to understand her language in the spoken form, but he was able to recognize the name of her hotel when she pulled out her travel reservation and showed it to him. After heart-stopping twenty minute ride on highways peopled with drivers who all seemed to be racing-car drivers in training, she finally arrived safe and sound, at her hotel.

Bright and early the next morning, she arose and set straight out for the city’s center, despite her experiences of the previous day. It turned out to be one of those life-changing decisions that happen so very rarely. For, wherever she turned, she was shop windows filled with row upon row of exquisitely and ornately designed men wedding bands. In a flash, she had her calculator out and, after doing all the math, concluded that she could easily make more than five hundred percent profit if she resold them back home.

That day, on a street out in the middle of nowhere, a new business came into the world. There still is not a single citizen of that strange little country who is capable of speaking a language other than the one that they were born to. But that does not bother our heroine. She prefers it that way, since it helps to keep where she gets her rings from a closely guarded secret. She has, after all, learned their language.
